Description
Stage 1
Youth courses can be either run in a group where the instructors are in powerboats and the youths/children are in dinghies or they can be run in a larger dinghy with the instructor in the boat with the youths/children. The youngest age that someone can sail without a parent or guardian is 8 years old.
This course is run over 2 days, starting at 10:00am and finishing at 4:00pm with a lunch break between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.
Completing the course doesn’t necessarily mean that a suitable level of ability will have been reached, certification will only be awarded once an appropriate degree of competence has been achieved. We will do our best to help students reach this goal however some may get there sooner than others
There is no assumed knowledge for stage 1. The content of the course includes launching and recovery, helming, components of the boat and basic sailing. The ability achieved once stage 1 has been completed is to understand basic principles, being able to helm, speed up and slow down, giving a great start to sailing.
Clothing and personal equipment.
If you have your own wet gear such as a buoyancy aid or wetsuit, we recommend you wear this as you know it fits and is comfortable. Suitable footwear is required to be worn while on the course, this could be wetsuit boots, wet shoes or old trainers. We do not allow flip flops and we do not recommend crocs.
If you don’t have your own kit, we can provide equipment for you whilst on your course, this can include wetsuits, spray tops and buoyancy aids. We do not provide footwear.
Even if the weather is overcast, we would recommend wearing sun cream, on hot & sunny days a sun hat & sunglasses is a good idea. Water bottles can be taken out to stay hydrated & there is a free water filling station on the dinghy park.
