DAY SKIPPER THEORY COURSE

A comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology & the basics of seamanship. Invaluable for learning how to start making decisions on board & if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course.

COURSE TYPE THEORY
SUGGESTED MINIMUM PRE-COURSE EXPERIENCE Some practical experience desirable.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE None.
COURSE CONTENT Basic seamanship & introduction to navigate & meteorology.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE The syllabus arms would-be skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day.
A basic knowledge of lights, weather & IRPCS is also included.
MINIMUM DURATION 40 hours & 2 assessment papers.

COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER
OFFSHORE THEORY COURSE

Ideal for candidates for the Coastal Skipper practical course & Yachmaster Offshore exam. Some revision of the Day Skipper shorebased course plus more advanced skills in offshore & coastal navigation by day & night pilotage & meteorology.

COURSE TYPE THEORY
SUGGESTED MINIMUM PRE-COURSE EXPERIENCE Knowledge equivalent to the Day Skipper Shorebased course.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE Navigation to Day Skipper standard & some practical experience is recommended.
COURSE CONTENT Navigation, meteorology, collision avoidance, safety & passage planning.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE Understands the principles of navigation for coastal & offshore passages.
MINIMUM DURATION 40 hours & 3 exam papers.

MARINE RADIO SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE COURSE

This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on board any British vessel, which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE None.
COURSE CONTENT Use of marine radio including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency & safety procedures.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE Can use a Marine VHF radio.
MINIMUM DURATION 1 day including an exam.

RYA DIESEL ENGINE COURSE

Mechanical failure is the main cause of lifeboat callouts to yachts. This course includes basic maintenance & engine care, which prevent most cases of engine failure.

SUGGESTED MINIMUM PRE-COURSE EXPERIENCE None.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE None.
COURSE CONTENT Basic maintenance & engine care.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE Awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea & rectify defects which do not require workshop support.
MINIMUM DURATION 1 day.

OUTBOARD MOTOR MAINTENANCE COURSE

Basic maintenance & repair of outboard motors up to 20hp.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE None.
COURSE CONTENT Basic maintenance of outboard motors up to 20hp.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE Carry out basic maintenance on any outboard motor up to 20hp.
MINIMUM DURATION 1 day.

RYA FIRST AID COURSE

A one-day course designed for small boat users. This course is MCA and HSE approved & satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster & Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence & some commercial work afloat.

SUGGESTED MINIMUM PRE-COURSE EXPERIENCE None.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE None.
COURSE CONTENT First aid & resuscitation techniques for yachtsmen, including a knowledge of the treatment for hypothermia.
ABILITY AFTER COURSE Understands basic first aid in a marine environment.
MINIMUM DURATION 1 day.

HSE FIRST AID COURSE'S

Under Health & Safety regulations employers must provide first aid training for their employees. The HSE Appointed Persons is the minimum requirement. The First Aid At Work Course is a requirement for larger businesses or higher risk situations.

We are happy to hold the course either in our own premises (subject to availability) or attend a venue of your choice within the local area. Courses to be held further a field may be subject to travelling expenses.
